Okay, so I just took my 2000 Celica GT for it's 90,000 maintance service tune up at my usual Bob Smith Toyota in La Crescenta, CA. I had the check engine light on for some time, thought it was just my MAS(F?) sensor being dirty again, and they checked it for me for free. Turns out that they say I need a new catalytic converter and quoted me $1,130 for the part and $118.50 to install it. Do they think I'm rich...? I don't need a smog check until March 2006 and was wondering if driving with a bad catalytic converter is bad, ie decreased gas mileage, etc. I read a post that one forum member got the high flow Magnaflow OBD-II 2.25 inlet/outlet for $110, but the cheapest I found was at Magnaflow's website for $212. Does anyone know where I can find it the cheapest, whether online or anywhere in the Los Angeles, CA area? I called muffler shops in my area and got the basic $350 installed. My local muffler shop will install one for $70, but just gotta find it. I'm going to post this in other forums so most members can see my problem. Thanks in advance for any help on this subject matter.

you pay for what you get when it comes to catalytic converters. The price of the convertors depends on how much platinum, pallatium and rohdium it contains, all of which are very expensive metals. The more metal, the longer the converter will last. If you pay $100-200, expect to pay that again a year or so down the road. With the high flow cat, you probably wont pass emmissions.

The celica's cat is pretty high-flow, or so I've heard.
