Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance used turbo? good idea or bad?

ok heres the thing, ive been wanting to buy a turbo for my gts but theyre mad expensive, i found used turbos for like 200 bucks or less and they come with a 30 day warrenty...idk if i should buy it or not,if i do get that id have to buy everything else such as downpipes, bov, intercooler ..ect so idk wat to do please help! check it out at www.spooledmotorsports.com [spooledmotorsports.com] thanx

i agree... i never recommend to getting junk yard parts.. someone i really hate is trying to pull a twin turbo seat up in an integra engine (everything and i mean everything is junk yard engine, turbos). he said he can rip me apart and i said yup you can... but i will be laughing when i pass you because your engine blew up...

In my opinion it's like buying a used car...you buy from dealerships because you know they are certified and with a warranty etc. You don't know who used it last...BUT if it breaks it's supposed to be covered by a warranty at least for a while. That's the guarantee you get buying a turbo new too...it shouldn't take a shit on you unless YOU screw it up..

If you buy private party...you have to really get a good feel about what type of guy you are buying from...if he takes care of his shit...if he's honest...up front, etc. Is he a guy that would ALWAYS let his car run for a few mins to let the turbo cool down or not? I think it CAN BE perfectly safe to buy a used turbo if there isn't more shaft play than there's supposed to be...if it's in good shape, etc...i mean you just have to use your discretion

oh and i forget where i saw this...i think in motor trend or sport compact car or something...a team of guys built up an average golf into a SERIOUS performance car using only used parts bought off of ebay...

the site says that the turbo is cleaned by them and is backed up wit a 30 day warrenty...its not a junk yeard part its an actual company selling new and used turbos... and i want a turbo so i can earn cash to buy a new one i just need sumthing to start me out you kno? idk if they re certifited but i'll look into it

I would go for it...definitely if that's what you want to do anyway...would buying all of the parts separately and doing it all yourself be THAT much cheaper than buying the C2 kit on the group buy?

You would need to get your own fuel map and everything tuned too...

I wouldnt recommend it. Not because they are used, but i wouldn't recommend doing a custom kit. Its more of a headache than its worth, and most likely unless you have a lot of hookups it will end up costing just as much if not more in the long run than an actual kit that's already out there, like C2 and SF. Remember when you piece together a custom kit theres no research and development there, you're just slapping together parts, a kit thats already been out has been researched and developed.

wow man i never looked it at that way... i just dont kno wat to do you kno? i got two sides of it soo idk wat to do... does anyone know where i can get a turbo for less than a grand?

you get wha tyou pay for. I don't think I'd trust jsut slappin any old part on the celica. I know I would NEVER do it to my own car.

also remember you're gonna need engine management. which if you go the power fc route, you're looking at about $1,000 jsut for the ecu w/o any tuning.
It's much safer, reliable, smarter to get a kit from a well known company such as SF or C2power who already make lotsa kits for the celica and should anything go wrong you'll have people around to offer advice.

with a homeade kit you're only source for advice is yourself. also if you pay a bunch of shops to do the installs and make the other parts you're gonna spend alotta money.
