when i downshift i press down the clutch.. rev the engine (rev matching) then shift to lower gear.. then release the cluth..

my friend said that its bad for my sycncros <-- what is that?
he said that the proper way to downshift is to
1.hold down cluth
2.move to nutural
3.release clutch
4.rev engine(revmatch)
5.press clutch
6.put in lower gear
7.release clutch

the difference is when i downshift i hold the clutch down the whole time and release when i moved in a lower gear with the rev matched..

what do yu do?

You really don't need to do revv-matching unless you are downshifting at high rpm, as you would in racing. Also heel-toe really doesnt need to be used outside of racing, especially if you are asking how to downshift, I wouldn't worry about it. spineyes

^ not true. It's the most low impact on your powertrain. It's also good for any situation where you have to break then accelerate quickly. Oh well, not my car. wave

Of course it's the best thing to do, I'm just saying it's not as necessary in a modern transmission like a celica, but then again it is a weak tranny so it would be good to learn I suppose. grin And I daily drive a car with no syncs, so I have to revv-match and use heel-toe constantly.

During normal day to day driving, rev matching or heel/toe downshifting isn't necessary, that's what syncro's are for. If your racing, or an emergency stop comes up, then it's understandable. My problem is being 6'4" with size 12 feet and driving a celica. When I heel/toe downshift, I have to use my heel on the brake, and blip the gas with my toes. It's a little awkward, but it works.

I do the same thing that you do. I have tried using the method that your friend describe but with the GTS the RPM drops pretty damn fast for me to rev match properly or catch the RPM at the right spot.

I myself am not too sure which one is the better method.

Can anyone here tell us which out of these two method is better?

Hmmm...I guess. But there are diff. methods of driving in my opinions. And it is not like everyone is an expert when it comes down to driving or even shifting for that matter, that is why some people get into accidents and some does not...That is why some people mis-shift and some does not...that is why some people drive auto and some drive standard.

If you are one of the few who actually have skills, then why not share and teach?

downshift
as you are about to release the clutch blip throttel don't have to rev match the car will do it by its self as long as you tap the gas and jump the rpms they will move easyer (then just downshifting and dropping the clutch)

what as stated above is double clutching and pretty much useless you do not have to put it in netrual and then push in and out the clutch syncros solved it for us

hha maybe i'll do an intial d style video
and heal/toe braking is pretty much useless on the street does not help with emergency braking if your slamming the brakes you better be pushing that clutch in too

You only double clutch in (OLD) cars without syncros in the gearbox.

But if you are really good at maching the rmps when shifting gear, you don't have to use your clutch in your Celica - and when your skills improve you can shift gears really quick without using the clutch.

yea in cars that gets hairy on my bike i do it all the time its 10x smoother and saves a lot of time clutchless up/down shifts

but man in my car eek i would never try it

Hmm I heard about truckers doing that, but I never heard how you can upshift/downshift without pressing the clutch in regular cars.

Anyone wants to tell me how to do it?

when i downshift i clutch in, shift to lower gear, give a little gas, and let out the clutch. rev-matching is a good idea to keep the shift smooth.

what i actually do is when i shift, i hit the throttle for a split second right after i push the clutch in and shift gears, and it shifts nice and smooth.

your freind is telling you to double clutch... wich is stupid and pointless because you have synchro's...


revmatching is a good idea, the way you do it now is fine and will save your synchro's...


its bad to just jam it into gear without rev matching... over time it will kill your synchro's.

and about not having to revmatch.. if you dont yur car is going to jerk really hard...

im talking about going 40-50mph in 6th gear and then pick up speed by shifting from 6th to 2nd..

it wont jerk if you let off the clutch slowly, it'll just slow you down which is what downshifting is for

a 91 240sx is new enough to have synchros. i believe synchros came about in the mid 60's? (someone know?) double clutching i don't believe will hurt anything, but it's pointless, slower, and not helping anything either.

Very interesting topic in my opinion.

It's easy to upshift/downshift without a clutch. To shift up, accelerate to a reasonable RPM, pull the shifter out of gear and pull/push toward next gear using light pressure. Once the engine and tranny match revolutions, the shifter will continue into the next gear. Down shifting is done the same way, but after you pull the shifter out of gear, rev the engine then pull/push shifter with light pressure toward next gear until the revolutions match and it drops into gear. It can be done with cars, but it's not recommended because it will mess up the syncros. I drive dump trucks and tractor trailers everyday, so I use this method all the time, otherwise my left foot gets quite tired after a day of work, up and down the gears.

so is it ok that when i got to stop or corner is jsut put it in neutral the either in the corner or after i revmatch and put it in a lower gear. is it better to downshift or jsut put it in neutral when you stop. i remeber someone saying that its easier to replace clutch so downshifting is better. I am very new at driving stick so deff woudl like pointers. Thanks everyone for your help.

When I'm trying to accelerate and pass I just turn on my auxillary booster rockets spineyes rofl...and when I'm trying to slow down I just ... wait... what is this "Shifting" and "slowing down" that you earthlings speak of...

Double declutching is the smoothiest way to downshift.

For example, you drive in the 4th gear and you want to turn.
Go 4 -> 2 with the double declutching, your car will slow down automatically without any breaking (or break a little to show the lights), and you feel very comfortable while turning.

If you need to slow down -
1. Push in the clutch.
2. Shift to neutral.
3. Hit the 'chutes and come to a complete stop
4. Get out and reload your 'brakes'
5. Continue driving! =)

i dont know about you guys but when i downshift and accelerate i just throw it into the gear and push the gas. when im trying to slow down i put it in neutral and use the brakes most of the time. on rare occasions like before making a turn i will downshift into second right before or after the turn but by that time im going slow enough to where it kicks in smoothly anywayz...i dont understand revmatching and downshifting because your rpms are going to shoot up when you downshift anywayz..if im driving incorrectly then lemmi know because no one showed me how to drive a stick shift i just go in the car and learned on my own. thumbsup

You don't need to double clutch on our cars, nor do you need to rev match if you don't want to.

That's what synchros are for, but rev matching will put less wear on them.

OMG... yu guys really need to learn how to drive yur cars!!

okay.. one guy said that he goes around corners in neutral.. this is very bad unless yur a grandma driver.. I never leave a car in neutral while driving.. you lose all control of the car..

another person said that he dosent understand why you have to do rev matching.. well.. first if i raced yu and you didnt rev match i would own you.. second.. your fucking up your transmission, your motor mounts, and shocking the engine..

when driving you want to feel a smooth ride.. anytime you do something that jerks.. your not driving correctly and damaging your car..

oh and... please dont try to redline your car when its cold..
i always let my car warm up about 3 min at the least before driving.. if im in a rush i drive slowww
