Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Magnetic oil drain plug?

Anyone seen or heard about these?

It's a super-strong magnetic drain plug that's supposed to attract and collect very fine metallic particles in your oil. I'd be interested if anyone's tried one, or if it's just a bunch of BS that'd do more harm than good.

I have heard about those before and never for the Celica community, but yes I have heard of those or something similar.
I would be interested if anyone has used one before on their Celica's and had something positve to say about it.
I don't think it would work. I leave the explanation for someone else.

When I had my '97 Honda Civic these types of drain plugs came OEM.

When I changed my transmission oil the drain plug had metal on it. It does work to some extent.

Every aircraft engine I ever worked on has it. I realy like them in trannys. there are no filters in some rearends/transaxles. fine metal powder in small ammounts are normal. chips are unacceptable. If you wanna realy freak out get a filter cutter and start checking what your engine oil filter is catching!!

i have one and it works i guess. i do notice it does collect a bit of metal shavings. its cool when i do oil changes cause i can just stick the drain plug to the side of the oil pan while it drains. no misplacing the drain plug.

It's useless, since our engines are aluminum. put a magnet to a piece of aluminum and see what happens. It will not stick.

Therefore: magnetic drain plug + aluminum engine = useless mod.

^^but our transmission gears are not made of aluminum, too soft of a metal. So if you have a magnetic drain plug in your transmission it will collect metal shavings. The Celica block is aluminum not internal components.

The internals of the engine won't affect the motor like you may think.
They will not be a cause of metal shavings or deposits in your engine or oil or oil filter. That just won't happen ever.
If you are worried about any deposits in the engine just get an engine flush. Toyota will do it for $100.
With the tranmission, I have never heard of any one using a magnetic drain plug for that and the reasons are obvious.

Yea, the lack of actual ferrous metals in our engines makes the magnet useless, what few bits of actual steel it may grab are of little consequence.

Better to have a good oil filter, that is the key to preventing particles from circulating through the oil. You can use a filter cutter to open it up at the oil change to inspect it, and see how bad the engine is wearing.

wow so harsh how about this having a metal oil plug will not harm your engine in any way and most likely will help is some small stupid matter...because remeber people just because the block is alluminum(alloy) and the heads are ceramic(alloy i believe) what hold every thing together is not alluminum bolts,nuts,pins, everything believe me there is megnetic stuc all over INSIDE the block and tranny but honestly that plug is not going to do jack because you get some thing in there big enougf to cause damage its to late for that plug to get it But it would be neat to add to you list of mods ...lol
