among all the other problems my car is experiencing. My intake has now started to make back firing sounds when I shift from 1st to 2nd. Is this a timing chain issue or what?

if you have a newer celica you should have a timing belt(correct me if i am wrong)take a timing light to it and check the timing(obviously)then make sure your AFM is still attached to your intake properly. maybe the sensor has come off and making the fuel mixture to rich or something. anyway just a speculation. check the timing first...

If our cars were carbourated then it would be a possibility, but to my knowledge it's almost impossible for a fuel injected car to backfire(thru the intake). The only thing I can think of is pre-detonation within your manifold, and that's a REALLY bad thing. What I mean is a collection of fuel collectis within the manifold before it's injected into the cylinders...but that fuel is burning within the manifold, before it makes it into the injectors and cylinder. That can happen when running nitrous, or too low octane gas. Please someone correct me if any of this is wrong, don't want to lead anyone in the wrong direction.

well when the new motor was put in the timing chain was off. Off so bad that air was getting sucked in the intake and exhaust at the same time. That alone was a bad sign. They claimed to have fixed the timimg but did not replace the chain. The sound is a really loud pop when im going from first to second in lift.

You cant backfire in the intake mainfold. Check timing it has to be off becasue your valves are opening at the wrong time. We also have timing chains not belts so you are going to have a lot to do to fix this! Good luck!
