I bought my 2000 GTS 2weeks ago and just noticed that the gear grinds in Reverse & downshifting into 4th. I know this is a common GTS problem between the year 2000-2001 and it's bugging me quite badly angry
Anyways, I wasnt too worry about it because I bought an Extended warranty along with the car from AUL administrators (not sure if any of you heard of it)
Today I took the car to Toyota, they test drove it and they were guessing that might be the problem with synchros.
Unfortunately my 5years 60000miles warranty has expired, so I have the service advisor call up the AUL (the extended warranty company) and they responded that "the dealer have to tear the whole tranny apart and state exactly which component has failure, until then we will not sure if it's covered in the policy." Well the cost of tearing the tranny apart is $700 wtf if by the time they have teared the tranny and find out the problem that's not covered in the policy, I have to be responsible for the $700 confused
Here's what it saids in the term & condition
"The automatic or manual transmission case is covered if damage by the failure of an internally lubricated part."
My question is that does the synchros related to the internally lubricated part? and should I take the risk to have them tear my tranny apart?

Welcome to ALL suggestion~ and thanks for reading happywink

hey i have a 2000 gts too and when i bought mine i had the same issue with downshifting in general. i held off getting it checked out cause i had bought an extended warranty. 6 months later i was just driving a round and stopped at a red light and the when it turned green i just started to drive and i started to hear a realluy hard clicking noise(kinda when you put a card between the frame and tire of you bicycle) and basically my tranny fell apart inside and the housing cracked i was screwed i though the extended warranty covered it but they didnt cause they said that i still had the factory warranty. toyota didnt cover cause they said if the housing cracks it my fault and not a manufacture defect angry it sucked. So basically i had to fork out 3300 beans for a new tranny. MAKE SURE YOU WARRANTY COVER IT TO THE DIME READ ALL THE FINE PRINT. Cause they will take every chance to weasel out of it, trust me. And if i were you id either start saving up money or try to find a used tranny. some other advice, im not sure so dont quote me on this but i believe there was a tranny recall of some sort on that year for the celi. so look that up dont ask them just research it. Best of luck to you rice

I'd just call up your warranty place (AUL), and ask them if syncro's are covered. it'd be a simple yes or no answer. It definately sucks to have to pay the $3000+ on new syncros.

I have a 2000 5spd gt and had the same problem. I was also told that I would be responsible for the $700 if it was not covered under the extended warranty. I took the gamble and later on I got a call from them saying that it was the synchros and tranny and that it was covered under warranty. I was already thinking that I was going to pay out of my pocket, but good think it turned out positive on my end. Good luck and I hope everything gets covered under warranty for you.

i got my 2000 gts back in 9/03.

it would get stuck in first sometimes and would bite shifting into second. can't remember which syncros were destroyed 2nd & 3rd or 2nd & 1st but anyways i had to have the transmission replaced. first they tried to get me to pay for it but the toyota rep. was there and i waited for like two hours for an answer. i snuck in within the original warranty period (one month later and it would have expired). they replaced the entire transmission under warranty.

you said you just bought your car like two weeks ago. wouldn't the dealership have some moral obligation to fix it within such a short timespan? pretty much everyone that has a 2000 gts has had transmission issues and the dealership can't blame you for a nationwide epidemic.

after i had my transmission replaced i got the b.s. extended warranty also. a lot of good it has done so far (sarcasm)...

hey guys, i have a 2000 GT and had a problem with grinding in 5th gear. I was not under warranty any more, but i still got toyota to pay for it under their "goodwill" program last week. If you ask the service manager if they will help you out, you have a good chance you could get it for free. If he says no, go to the district manager, if he says no, go to the regional rep. hopefully you will get a rebuilt tranny like i did.

What is "Goodwill" program? can you give me more info for it?
I'd rather have Toyota to replace a whole new tranny than have my extended warranty company to tear down my tranny and not knowing if it's covered.

I have a 2000 GT too. I had the same thing happen to me. a few weeks after I bought it I heard a clicking like polok said "kinda when you put a card between the frame and tire of you bicycle" I took it to the dealership and they replaced the counter-shaft bearring under the warranty.

Good Luck man thumbsup
