Celica Forums General Discussion General Anyone else ever noticed...

Has anyone else noticed that you can lock the differential in our cars? If you put your celica in reverse and back up, and then put it in first and take off it locks the diff, thus spinning both tires instead of just one. This is good for getting off the line. I was just curious as to:

A) Has anyone else noticed this?

B) Does anyone know the specs? and how it works... or how long it stays locked,
(I would assume it's until you shift out of first)

yeah im gonna throw it in reverse to get off the line better

you dont put in reverse when you wish to get off the line... its like if you back up onto the line, switch into first, then wait a minute and then floor it. By backing up the differential remains locked, even if you turn off the car and then come back later. You took it the wrong way.

Is this only in the GTS?...this is something new

i have a 2000 GT. I had never noticed it before. But i have done burnouts before, and we all know that normally the one tire spins and the other doesnt. Well today i was doing a burnout for a photo going in our school yearbook, and i backed up to the end of the parking lot and then did the burnout, noticing that smoke came from both tires equally. I was very surprised to come back and find two skid marks instead of just one. So i did it a second time, finding the same thing. So i asked a few buddies and one said that he has heard of that in Honda Civics, but was unsure the specs of it or what cars have it. He said that when you reverse and then switch into first in his 2000 civic it looks the diff. I dunno...maybe this is something to look in to.

everytime i've ever done a burnout it has always been both wheels... unless it was into a turn... this is in a 02 gt

would this work in an auto gts?

Is it bad for the tranny of you reverse out of a parking space or something and are still slowly going backwards when you put it into first and drive off?

I am unsure if it works in an auto... Im even unsure if maybe it is a real thing, it just seemed that way to me so i figured i would ask if anyone knew.

I also dont know if it is bad to reverse out of a spot and then start to move forward, i figure if anything it would burn the clutch a little, but im sure it wouldnt be bad...it would be kinda like when you start up a huge hill, the car rolls back a little and then you start to go forwards... I dont think it would be too bad.

And as for turning... i even took a turn while burning out this way and still had both wheels spin... i looked at the skid marks to make sure.
