i'm going to a much smaller system, either one 10" or one 12" kicker solo-baric l7. i want a small enclosure, but should i go for sealed or ported?

and if anyone wants a 15" l5 solo-baric in perfect shape, pm me or check this thread: https://celicahobby.com/ubbthreads/thread.f_1953533691_0_collapsed_5__1.html

I have owned sealed and ported... I currently have 2 Kappa Perfects in a sealed box.. and i used to have 2 MTX's in a ported.. the ported gives boomy base put a sealed gives the same powerful hitting base and a lot of quality

i have the kicker l7's and i have both small ported and one large ported where it looks like you can fit 2 l7's but only has one hole. The large one hits very hard and bass can be felt in the house...but the small one only hits in the car and not as hard as the big box...

I hate when people say sealed sounds better than ported even though I use a sealed box. If you go ported, make sure you take your subs to an audio shop and have them build one from the specs of your subs. The reason why most of you think ported boxes sounds bad is because you just buy or hear someone with one of those premade ported box. They are not made for all subs. Those prefab boxes are usually tuned from 20-35 hz. If you get one made for your subs, you will be very satisfied. Ported boxes are way more complicated to make because you have to use the right lenths in ports so you can tune it to a certain number. Usually ported boxes hit higher numbers than a sealed enclosure. You know late night when you hear bass coming from no where?...that's a sealed box. Ported boxes are loud as shit inside the car, but not as loud outside to me than a sealed box. The reason i use a sealed box is because ported boxes are usually big because they have those ports. I drive my celica and the last thing i need is a huge box in the trunk. Hope that thought some of you guys alittle about ported and sealed boxes.

oh yeah by the way, i was at a local sound competition, and there were a guy running two 12" L7's and it was in a box made for em...it hit hard as hell...at the point where you didn't want to sit in the car more than 15 secs..and sounded nice as hell.

sealed has a nice and tight and more accurate sound and can fit in small spaces. ported you need a whole lot more room. i'd get ported if you got a small system to give it more boom.

i have a sealed custom setup with 2 12" new L7's. i first had a ported one made but it didnt fit in the trunk so a sealed one was made. right now my 2 subs sealed are really loud and isnt even remotly necessary to have it near full volume to make your head hurt. i dont know how loud it would have been ported but now i have the amp turned down to about half cause the bass over powered the lyrics of the songs coming out of the speakers. so eventually when i get new components, i will turn the amp back up. honestly i dont need to turn the amp up to get more bass than i need, but for the shows you need it. here's a pic of my system as of now, neons are getting put into the amp rack soon.

You get a one hit wonder with a ported box. That is why SPL guys use them. It depends on the tuning frequency of your car and sub.

Solobarics are designed for a sealed enclosure.

Actually, they are designed to be in a ported. You can read more about it at their website.

Hey man look, those subs are pos to be in a ported box, All i got to say is i have gone threw fosgate power hx2s 12"s from a sealed box because i made it smaller then why they were pos to to fit in car. Ported is a lot louder and with that sub it would be better ported and when someone sitts in ur car they would be damn what you got acouple 12s or 15s and really only have one 10. It is very nice but it has to be made for the speaker! REMEMBER THAT!!!!! hope i helped!

If you really want to boom port it. thumbsup
mine are sealed, the hatchback has to be closed to really feel the bass.
i guess it also depends on what kind of music you listen to.

i've had loud systems. now i want somethin clean and better quality. surely two of those comp vr's in 10s or 12s would be loud enough. and they're soooo much cheaper. it's like $160 shipped for two new 12s.

Maybe the new square ones are but the older round ones are designed to be more efficient in a smaller volume "sealed" enclosure. Thanks for the tip though...

Your exactly right...i thought you were talking about the new square ones since that's what the whole topic is about..lol. The old round styles sound very nice in very small enclosures. You know your stuff..but i think the style of the old ones are outdated but sounds great.
