hey all i have heard that removing the intake butterfly improves sound and performance any help??? and downsides to it? and could someone tell me how to do it as well??? thx all

Do you mean the butterfly plate in the throttle body...HAHAHAHAHAHA
if you did that your car would be at WOT at all times and would not run...i dont own a celica so I dont know if there is anything else that is referred to as a butterfly in airbox

I did it before my intake. It was a tad louder. Power i didnt feel any. Now there is a dyno on the other site showing a .2 hp increase i bleive

But if your not getitng an intake any time soon i woudl do it jsut for the bit of better sound

"Last month we tried removing the flap door assembly and thought we felt a significant improvement in both power and drivability, but subsequently found no power on the dyno. We then tried swapping the flap door in and out without telling the driver and found that nobody could really tell the difference. Our conclusion? Several people on this site have reported problems with stalling after sudden stops as a result of removing the butterfly valve assembly.

It's purpose is to act as a kind of choke to help the engine idle better when starting, particularly when it is cold outside.

A small controlled amount of air constriction at low RPMs is actually better for low end torque.

It's one of those mods that dose very little if anything for performance and actually has the potential to compromise over all reliability of the car. Really not worth it in my opinion.

yea it is essentiually a choke for when its cold. but here in florida its never cold its a good little steppingstone mod between stock and cai Pair this with a K&N filter you may boost that up to a .3 difference+ filter

It doesn't add anything, but it sure sounds cool. I posted a vid of the butterfly mod, but I haven't got time to search for it.

I removed the butterfly valve for some time, but put it back again as I did not like the cars behavior (I want power at lower RPM). My experience on a 2005 GT is as follows:

1) Removing the valve will cause a deeper sound
2) It will possibly cause loss of power at lower RPM (that is what I noticed)
3) but will possibly give a slight gain at higher RPM
4) Car got a little harder to start.

well fuck i have auto so low rpm is needed ohh well ile just wait till i get a CAI or SRI

I removed mine and I am not getting loss of power at lower rpm. Maybe it is because my low RPM sucks to begin with since I do have a GTS. But the sound is there and lift kicks a bit harder (might be my imagination).

I suggest that you try it out for 1 day or 2 and see if you like it. If you have problems, then put it back on. It is not like you are chopping off tubes and relocating anything. The removal is very easy, just make sure you use a fat enough screw to plug up the hose.

You can do this for a time being until you await for your intake. You gotta do a bit more work installing a CAI or a SRI anyways so take this as a practice run on messing around with that part of the engine bay.

I agree, give it a try, it is an easy mod. I had my valve off for several weeks, then reinstalled it. And I notice that my car gained a tiny bit in the lower RPM. But this was using the butt dyno.

No change in gas mileage, both gave med around 36-38 mpg on highway on my auto.

For me, I will get an AEM CAI later on. Just need to save up some money first... (just bought sway bars...)
