Hey all i just wanted to know whats faster? auto or manual ??? celica i would think they would be the same seeing as the auto has e-shift. and for those who think e-shift is crap its not. why else would F! cars use e-shift? because it rocks. and some people say there is no point modding a auto (for HP/KW gains) why is that ???? what diff does it make??? its not like when you put a CAI on a manual its better than an auto soo why do people say not to bother ?????

It depends all on a person's preferances. The main differance is that in the US we don't have that e-shift. Dammit, I'm jealous! Since we don't have that here people get more control of the engine and shifting (lift!) and all that stuff versus having an auto. I have an auto because it was either that or no car at all While I would prefer a stick at times, that's certainly no reason not to mod it. People who say not to mod an auto are diehard, even though I've seen people get better times on the 1/4 mile with an auto than a stick. The horse power between the two stays the same though. It really comes down to the person. I have a auto GT, but dammit I still love modding it!

Most four cylinders are far better off with a standard transmission because you can better utilize their powerband; a six speed is definately the way to go.

E-Shift... what is that, exactly? If you're referring to the "Semi-Auto" shifting... then the USA DOES have it. It's only available on the GTS versions of the Celica, but the shifter is on the wheel. Up shift on the bottom of the wheel, down shift on the top.
I find it a nice feature, but it's more or less a gimmick unless you really want to simulate a manual feature. The only problem, of course, is that it's still only 4 speed. So the manual users still have the advantage.
I still prefer auto just 'cause I do a lotta city driving & when I press the petal to the metal (or carpet in this case), I want it to kick into gear automatically for me, and not guess which gear to throw it into before redlining & f-up my engine.

lol thanx falselogic you cool and the shifting is not at the top and the bottom so you obviously have never driven the australian model. and its faster through corners than a manual. and i get lift in mine soo lah lah lah. and also that means i also have a free hand for my girl

my dad always said that auto was better because you can't shift a standard as efficiently as an automatic can shift (he used to drag race autos and beat everybody... he's got like 50000 trophies.. haha) as for the celica though... i would imagine that standard WOULD be faster because it's a 6-speed...
personally i prefer an auto just for the convenience of it... standard is fun sometimes... but i can't stand driving standard everywhere i go... i had to drive my celi last year for 3 months straight when my sebring broke down, and i went nuts... i begged dad to give me an auto to drive.. (although that was in part because it was rainy and i can't stand driving the celi on crappy days)... i like to just get in my car and go...
and i think it's stupid when people say you shouldn't mod an auto... some people prefer autos over standard... that's all there is to it... there's nothing wrong with making your car faster and/or better looking.. no matter what tranny it has in it

How do you get a good launch in the auto without being able to rev above 4k? I know some people seem to drop their clutch at 4K rpm and go, but the only way i can see you doing it in an auto is the neutral bomb! And forget that, because that just cant be good.

F1s have an SMT...a celica e-shift is a clutchless automatic putting less power to the wheels and some people say there is no point modding a auto (for HP/KW gains) why is that ???? what diff does it make??? people say that because the gains sometimes do not justify the cost as opposed to a manual. in my view...if it works...mod the car however you like. it's your car. its not like when you put a CAI on a manual its better than an auto soo why do people say not to bother ????? actually it is...

why else would F! cars use e-shift? Because the tranny is so delicate and the shifting so complicated that the driver would more than likely blow the crap out of the car on upshifts. They still have to downshift, though.

I drive a GTS auto. I don't know how to drive a manual yet. I was watching my parents driving a manual trans. and it's too much work for me. I like to drink sodas, rest my arms out the windows, etc. which makes it easier when driving an auto. I never race my car, so a manual would be a poor choice for me. People say it's more fun driving a manual, but to me it's just more work to do to drive the thing, when you can have an auto do the dirty work for you, so you can have more time relaxing in your car, stuff like that.

Manuals are definately quicker because you get better launches and they more quickly allow you to downshift into a precise gear for rolling passes. I fought to get the 5-speed for my GT, but since I wasn't paying for the car, I didn't get much of a final say. In the end, I'm still happy with my auto. With as much driving as I do, especially with all the traffic here in Tidewater, VA, I don't have to worry about shifting gears constantly.
I have driven both the 5-speed GT and the 6-speed GTS and there is a remarkable difference in acceleration compared to my auto. Compared to the 5-speed GT, I had a HELL of a time with the 6-speed and landing gears. I can understand why so many people mis-shift and blow trannies.

depends on aplication as stated before autos great for drag racing always launch at same rpm never miss a shift . if your ina high traffic stop and go area autos are great cause all you do is hit the gas man- great for cars with narrow power band gives you more options in gea selection gives you usally more gears

some autos are fine in certain cars in terms of performance. a auto TT supra gets actually better times than a manual. the auto 350Z have been known to slip in the high 13s with minor bolt ons on street titres...
but when you have a 1.8 liter 4 banger with a peak power of 7800 rpms and only 4 gears to work with...i mean, that's a lot of handicaps right there.

i think auto is good sometimes like when you want to eat a snack or bad traffic, but i think personally once you drive a standard (GTS!!!) you'll get hooked. oh yeah and between which one is faster, anything really you just need money. As far as celica's, standards are.

And it is a good idea to learn stick, if nothing else just to know it. Sometimes when you rent a truck it's manual. That and if you take a trip to europe, most if not all rental cars are stick.

well i have an auto GT and i love it because the traffic congestion on the 101 is the worst here in Cali... i would go crazy driving stick on that freeway... ive been on a GTS 6 speed and its so bad ass but if i was tp have one of those i would end up getting tickets like crazy so im better off w/ an auto

eh manual would only be fun to me on an AWD or RWD car mainly because it its easier to swing the back end out in turns... FF cars are great for the city & heavy traffic. i live next to the freeway and it gets really congested on my way to school and back and we have this "go 5 meters then stop" cause there are so many red lights...basically its all about preference. I drove my friend's BMW 535 but i dunno about you guys but that car is probably the most perfect car for manual. i mean damn its like a race car in a sedan body ... you guys should see that on top gear

If you mean "best" as in "fastest", then generally a manual. I like my auto GTS though for my daily driver. I guess I'm just getting old or something That, and I have two other cars for going fast (one a manual, one an Auto.)
