I am in sunny/hot ~65d-105d California weather most of the year. Your weather could be slightly different. Buy oil that matches your weather temperature condition. ie; Alaska would probably need a different weight than say, Mexico.
As for brands, oil tech is not what it was 50 years ago, but lots of rumors have followed companies for at least that long. Dont get too caught up in the back/forth that's plagued the oil consumer industry as of late. Valvoline has always been available to me, so i buy it. There has been no other major reason swaying my choice in oil companies other than that.
Remember- if the previous owner of your vehicle used conventional, you should stick with it rather than try to convert to synthetic. It is easier to go from synthetic to conventional than it is to go from conventional to synthetic.

wish i was living in a country with average 65-105d climate....think i actually need a holiday. I live in England, so mostly grey and rain most of the year. I have bookmarked the valvoline site. Thanks for being so helpful, I really appreciate it.
I have no idea what oil the previous owner used, but ill stick to the recommended oil of 5w30. Car is around 96k mileage so I will take it for a service on weekend and stick with 5w30 oil for the oil change
Have been switching back and forth between regular and synthetic oil a few times due to a minor oil leak. Never had a problem. I drive fast on long trips every week, 95- 100 MPH most of the time whenever traffic did not impede.
Leak was fixed. Now running full synthetic 5 - 30, car seems to run smoother.
