Hi all

I have a 2000 gen 7 Celica 2zz-ge. I know this year had problems with bad lift bolts so my first job was to check to see if they had been replaced and if not to do so. Before I did anything lift was working perfectly, I simply wanted to replace the bolts if they hadn't been replaced as a preventative task.

Sure enough, the intake bolt was snapped even though lift was still working. I went ahead and removed the broken bolt by removing the cams and pushing the rod through till I could pull the stud out.

I put it all back together, new bolts installed and was looking forward to some worry free lift now that I had new bolts in there.

ALas, the car does not hit lift. It did before the bolt replacement, now it does not. This seems a bit backwards to me.

Here's where I am now and I am quickly running out of ideas.

The car revs all the way to 8300rpm but there is none of the familiar kick at 6200rpm

The car is warmed up before I rev it up to 6200rpm. At least two clicks on the dash temperature gauge.

There is no check engine light illuminated, nor does it illuminate when I rev all the way to 8300rpm.

I've inspected the temperature sensor, inspected and cleaned the MAF sensor and the VVTL oil sensor.

I have removed and checked and cleaned the lift solenoid. I've connected it directly to 12v and it operates as it should. I've cleaned all the passages in the lift solenoid housing. I've cleaned the lift solenoid filter.

With the car off, I've directly connected 12v to the lift solenoid while its fitted in the engine and I can hear it click.

With the car running at idle I've connected 12v to the lift solenoid and the car immediately begins to run rough and then stalls. This makes me assume that the mechanics of the lift system are OK and that I'm dealing with a sensor / ECU problem.

I have run a makeshift ground wire directly from the negative battery terminal to the VVTL earth connections to rule out a bad earth.

None of this has changed anything. No lift at 6200rpm

I have not got an OBD2 reader but one is on the way. My next step is to plug that in, hook it up to my phone and do a few runs.

Please, anyone with any ideas. I'm dying to fix this. I want my lift back!

Thanks in advance.

Ian

Hi Ian, any luck or new details from the OBDII reader?
