My son's 2000 Celica GT has developed a noise (I think piston slap on #2 cylinder). We bought a used engine. My question is...Does the engine and (automatic) tranny come out as a unit or can we remove the engine only?

you would have to unbolt the tranny.

you could drop it straight down with the tranny but you have to take off a lot of stuff (suspension/frame) or just unbolt tranny and lift it straight up.
