Dunno, I have a 2000 and I can take it above 8k so I can land in lift in the next gear.
Perhaps your engine was cold. When your engine is cold, the ECU won't engage lift as a protection method so the engine won't get damaged.

Ok, and by warm, I mean when your temp needle goes from it's lowest point to at least one up.

He means that once he gets to 7500, his tach just drops as if he hit the fuel cut off.

yea that has happened to me one time and i thought i messed up my car but it is just that ur engine is cold. i got a 2000 gts 6 speed too and it only happenes when cold. i drove mine down the road move to see if it would happen again and it went right up to 8k fine so i was . to let you kno if you ever tried to race someone with a cold engine the fuel wil cut of in every gear. not a good idea to race cold. like you don't run a marathon cold.
