Well i was heading back from a trip about an hour and a half away from my house, and all of a sudden my motor starting knocking real bad, and BAM, blew up. Smoke started rollin out the back of the car, and i had to get put up on a flat bed and brought home. I did some research on it and it turns out i threw a rod. So if anyone can help me out in finding a new engine that would be great. Also any reasons on why i threw a rod would be great also.

The thing is that i was just cruisin along on the interstate at about 75 mph. And i checked my oil a few days before that and it was fine. I guess the 1zzfe is no good past 70000 miles for me.

just about any mechanic/bodyshop can grab a used one (usually $1,200-$1,500)
new ones will run you about $3,500-$4,000 for a mechanic/bodsyshop (installation included)
toyota dealerships will run you $5,000-$6,000 for a brand new one (installation included)
you can also look for used ones yourself by searching junkyards and google.com ... obviously look for ones that are totalled from behind and make sure that the engine mounts are not distorted or broken.

A lot of vvti engine's have been replaced under warranty because of a manufacturing problem. Heard something about the oil return line was too small, so the oil becomes too hot or something. Can't remember exactly...
But...anyways...the point: a lot of people have got their engine replaced under warranty. The most common time for this to happen (again: what i've HEARD) is when the engine has run between 50-70.000 km.
So maybe you should check with toyota before you go and spend a bunch of cash yourself...?

toyota says the won't cover mine under warranty. i have 67,000 miles on my vvtl-i (gts) and i have the extended 100,000 mile warranty...but they said it was 'driver error because of a missshift' (which isn't true).
but..if i even want to SEE if its covered under warranty...i have to pay toyota $1,500 out my own pocket for them to break the engine down so they can check and see if its covered or not...and they say 90% probably not. so needless to say i've very po'd and probably won't buy another toyota again...i can't afford to lose $1,500

Aout 1000 miles into buying my GTS, the motor spun the #4 rod bearing, I had to get an all new short block, and also needed some headwork. Warranty covered everything. the funny thing is, I wasn't pushing the car; it just happened due to a bad bearing and tight tolerances. They couldn't blame it on a misshift, since my car is an auto. Some of the earlier GTS cars were at risk, due to a bad batch of bearings that went out to some of those engines from 2001-2002. I also got no CEL, just Knocking and the sound of lug nuts in a coffee can. not fun. The shop did awesome work though, and I have never had a repeat. Good luck wih that man

Another Caleb accident? You should see people with turbos on their cars tune to 25+ PSI. One guy blew the rod right out. Too much combustion pressure and things will go wrong. So don't redline your car.

If it lasted that long it'll probably be fine, problems usually develop in the first 20K, after that, everyting is loosened up and broken in.

mine was one of the first 7th gen celicas to be built (december of '99) ... needless to say i inherited all the initial 'quirks' of having a first production car ... something i have definately learned from.

If your short block, head and crank is ok, I can send you a stock rod and piston. If you pay for shipping. if it helps.

Np man! I have those from st2 installs where we install new rods and pistons. I have plenty of them. Also I suggest to diagnose what parts are broken, and may buy better upgraded parts beside stock ones. It is wery hard to kill all the parts in the engine at once. Example: Maybe your shortblock and head are ok, but would need boreing, rods and new pistons. I would suggest rather buy wiseco pistons and Crower rods, beside to get a hole new or used engine. So make the diagnosis and do a calculation. (internals also will let you go st2) Gas

I'm not going to say or qoute anyone. I'm just sorry another Celica engine went. I've driven enough cars and driven my poor Celica into the ground to know what it takes beyond the talk. I just want to say I'm sorry for your misfortune and I hope the best for you in the future with everything. Good luck and don't worry, it's not the end of the world. I have been through worse.

never heard of the motor blowing for no reason. lord know sI kick the crap outa this motor and it still runs like a champ after 80K. 14.02 @ 100 mph just last night as a matter of fact lol have you checked into the oil pump? perhaps like someone said before it may have failed. that is definitly the weak point of our engines. also like gas said find out what exactly needs to be replaced. you might end up ahead of the game buy buying upgraded parts instead of an old stock motor. this could be especially beneficial since you want to run a stage 2 turbo kit. sad to here when celi's go down. GL getting it back up and goin

From what I can tell by being on the boards for a long enough time is that the 2000 GT's have a problem with something in the bottom part of the engine...I talked to a dealer buddy of mine and he said that he's put 3 new engines in celicas, twice for oil system problems, and once for a mis-shift...then the 2003 Gt's have problems with their tranny synchronizer bearings...it makes you tranny rattle...that and apparently their dealer frequently replaces catalytic converters die to malfunction (I'm guessing 02 sensors)...if you are looking for a rebuilt OEM engine, check out ATK-engines.com call them...they will be able to help out

Well it turns out the rod somehow came loose on the camshaft and drilled the inside of the block. Not real sure how this happened, but i am about to tear into it some more and see if i can find anything. Wish me luck.

ROd loose on the CAM shaft???? do you mean you spun a bearing on a connecting rod on the Crankshaft, and it tapped/drilled a hole into the block?????
