Celica Forums General Discussion General Air Vent Knob Issue

It's been rainy here in Cleveland so I've had the air vents sent on defog mode. The sun finally came out yesterday so when I got in my car and turned it on, Immediately went to change the air vents to flow heat directly out instead.

Only when I went to turn the knob (in this case counterclockwise) it resisted. I gave a little bit more careful tension and it finally moved. But it still doesn't turn like its supposed to and does nothing to change where the air is coming from. Not only that but when I try and turn it all the way back to defog mode, it won't sit there. It resists and kind of pushes it back away from the turning point.

I took the knob off and confirmed that it is latching on and turning the thing underneath. Its just not doing anything.

It's a 2001 RT by the way.

So I have two questions.

1. What happened?
2. Is it something I can fix myself or do I need to take it to a shop?
