Just picked up a 1993 Celica SXT with a rebuilt 98 GTS swap with some minor issues for pretty cheap, and on first start, I was mortified. There is a HORRIBLE ticking/pinging sound coming from the topside of the engine in between cyl 3 and 4 on the exhaust side. Previous owner quit driving it due to this and not wanting to do further damage. He said that the engine swapped into the vehicle was rebuilt by a mechanic near him, and that it had always had a slight tick. From what I've found researching so far these engines are known for having a loud valve train but this is DEFINITELY out of the norm. Ill include a video link so you guys can hear it as well.

My question to you guys is: Is this a horrible valve tick that would be fixed/quietened by adjusting the valves or am I looking at something much worse?

THANKS in advance!

Can't lie, I'm a risk taker but I would be alarmed for sure if I heard that. If you're able to do it/if you can afford it, you could always start with a valve adjustment and take it from there.

Thanks for the response, yeah I've been more of a Honda guy for the past couple years and done several rebuilds on D and B series alike as well as valve adjustments. I know our cars have the bucket and shim style lifters and after watching a couple videos and reading through the service manual, I'm fairly confident that I could do the adjustment myself.

My only question would be, is the TSS tool for valves required? I cant really justify spending 50 bucks on a tool if there's another possibly easier way to do it. Ill be doing the adjustment Sunday and will post updates then.
